Professor Emeritus Paolo Cherchi has been elected to the Accademia dei Lincei, the oldest scientific academy in Europe. Election to the academy is the highest academic honor bestowed in Italy.
The University of Chicago Center in Beijing hosted "Cervantes in China in his 400th Anniversary" on June 21 and 22. The symposium focused on talks on Cervantes and how to teach his works in China. It was co-sponsored by the UChicago Center in Beijing, Arizona State University, Chasqui, Early Modern Image and Text Society, Laberinto Journal, and Instituto Cervantes, Beijing.
Professor Jennifer Wild's recent book, The Parisian Avant-Garde in the Age of Cinema, 1900-1923, has been awarded an honorary mention by the 2014-15 Wylie Prize in French Cultural Studies committee. The prize was created in 1995 to honor the memory of Laurence Wylie, Professor of French Civilization at Harvard University. It has been awarded every second year to an outstanding book in French social or cultural studies. Forty-two books were nominated for this year’s prize.
María Gutiérrez Bascón and Katrina Powers, both graduate students in Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Studies, have each been awarded a 2016-17 Mellon Humanities Dissertation Completion Fellowship.
