We are thrilled to announce that in May 2025 Celia Bravo, Sara Dallavalle, and Diana Palenzuela have been awarded a $7,000 grant from the AI and Education Working Group (AIEWG) in support of their proposal, “AI-Driven Placement Testing for Spanish and Italian: Enhancing Language Placement Accuracy Through ACTFL-Aligned Assessment.”
This innovative project seeks to develop more accurate and pedagogically sound language placement tools by integrating artificial intelligence with ACTFL-aligned assessment practices. The grant was awarded as part of the University of Chicago’s broader Presidential AI Initiative, with support from the Chicago Center for Teaching and Learning (CCTL) and the College.
The initiative stood out in a highly competitive field and reflects RLL’s commitment to pioneering the thoughtful integration of technology in language education. The team will also be invited to share their findings with a wider university audience in the upcoming academic year.
The full list of AIEWG awarded projects and principal investigators can be found on the Inside UChicago Teaching and Learning website.
