Meriam is a native of the Dominican Republic, where she began her literary studies at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD). She earned a BA in Spanish and Latin American Studies in 2016 from Hunter College (CUNY). Her dissertation is concerned with contemporary Dominican narratives in which notions of "youth" and "youth culture" are deployed to construct a counter-imaginary to the Trujillo dictatorship and its spectral legacies. The dissertation aims to consider the literary mobilization of "youth culture" as a metaphor for social change which offers alternative views of the Dominican nation.

Dissertation: Ghosts of the Island: Youth Culture and the Legacy of Dictatorship in Contemporary Dominican Literature
