Ane Markes Larruzea

Lecturer, Spanish
amarkes@uchicago.edu
Office Hours: Monday/Wednesday 10:20-11:20 a.m.

I was born and raised in Bilbao, a city in the Basque Country. I have a double degree in Modern Languages and Basque Language and Culture from the University of Deusto and a master's degree in Spanish Linguistics from the University of Illinois at Chicago. My interests are mainly focused on languages in contact, on the effects of one language on the other and vice versa, and, mainly, on the situation of minority languages in a context where the use of the majority language is predominant (such as the situation of Euskera in Spain). I have taught Spanish to students of various ages and levels both in Chicago and in the Basque Country, and I like to motivate my students so that they feel interested and eager to learn a new language and its culture. Day after day I try to continue to develop myself as a teacher with innovative techniques that are appropriate for the students.
