Combined Graduate Program
Current RLL students whose interests lie at the intersection of more than one Romance language and literature may pursue a course of study in two RLL graduate programs (e.g., Italian and HLBS). Students must submit a petition (no more than one page) to the DGS by the end of spring quarter of their first year. The DGS, in consultation with the relevant Section Heads, will determine the intellectual soundness and feasibility of the student’s proposal, and will develop a plan for the fulfillment of requirements in both programs as follows:
Coursework
Students must complete the coursework for both programs, but electives and common courses may be double counted.
Language Requirements
The language requirement for each program may be fulfilled by the other language in the pairing.
Teaching Requirements and Exams
These will be determined on a case-by-case basis, in accordance with the specificities of each program.
Dissertation
Students should have at least one faculty member from each of the graduate programs on their committee. They may choose one dissertation director or two co-directors, one from each program.
Prospective students interested in this option should indicate this in their admissions application but must apply and be admitted to one of the single RLL programs.
