In Loving Memory of Professor Peter F. Dembowski

We are saddened to share the news that Peter F. Dembowski, Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of French Literature, passed away on Saturday, November 4, 2023. Born in Warsaw, Peter studied in Canada and France before receiving his PhD from the University of California at Berkeley. A scholar of medieval French and Provençal literature, he published numerous books and critical editions including: La Chronique de Robert de Clari (1963); Ami et Amile (crit. ed.; 1969); La Vie de sainte Marie l'Egyptienne (crit. ed., 1977); Jean Froissart and his Meliador (1983); Le Paradis d’amour et l'Orloge amoureus (crit. ed., 1986); Jourdain de Blaye (crit. ed, 1991); Erec et Enide (crit. ed. 1994), L'Estrif de Fortune et Vertu (crit. ed., 1999). He also wrote two books drawing on his personal history in Poland: Christians in the Warsaw Ghetto. An Epitaph for the Unremembered (University of Notre Dame Press, 2005) and Memoirs Red and White: Poland, the War, and After (University of Notre Dame Press, 2015).

According to the funeral home, a funeral mass will be held on Saturday, November 25, 2023 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 5472 S. Kimbark Ave.
