Admission Requirements

The Main Quadrangle

Admission to the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures is based upon three letters of recommendation, undergraduate transcript(s), Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores, and a writing sample in the language of specialization. A statement of purpose must be written in English, and the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required for applicants who are non-native speakers of English. An undergraduate degree in a Romance language is not required.

In keeping with its long-standing tradition and policies, the University of Chicago, in admissions employment and access to programs, considers students on the basis of individual merit and without regard to race, color, sex, religion, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin, age, disability, or other factors irrelevant to participation in the programs of the University.

Further details regarding these and other aspects of the program of instruction in each of the literatures, in combined degrees in Romance and other fields (for example, Latin American Studies, Comparative Literature), residency requirements, examinations, etc., can be requested from the office of the Dean of Students. At this point, the Department does not offer a part-time study option, on-line classes, or evening classes.
