Graduate Course Descriptions

20100/30100-20200/30200. Intermediate/Advanced Catalan. In this intermediate/advanced-level sequence, students review and extend their knowledge of all basic patterns (e.g., grammar, vocabulary, phonetics, sociocultural norms) of the language. They develop their oral and written skills in describing, narrating, and presenting arguments. They are exposed to texts and audio-visual material that provide them with a deeper understanding of Catalan literature, culture, and contemporary society. Autumn, Winter.

32501. Books, rebels, and bohemians: Catalans, the missing culture of Europe. The motherland of Dalí, Gaudí and Miró was also home to a major medieval empire and the hotbed of modern anarchism. But it is not a well known place, despite the fact that it may hold a higher density of writers and artists than any other country. This course, directed to graduates and undergraduates, will try to give a broad vision of Catalan culture, language and history. Lectures and participation will be in English, and no knowledge of Catalan or other romance languages will be expected. The missing culture of Europe will provide an introduction to these remarkable people, which due to political inclusion in Spain have often been neglected by the international community. The course will be open to both graduates and undergraduates, and it will be taught in English. A. Bosch. Spring.
